Knitting Lessons: Summer, 2014
June 10: Decoding a pattern (getting a clear vision of the entire project before mistakes are made innocently, causing ripping out or discouragement. Includes “mapping” the pattern.)
June 17: Casting on and binding off appropriately so that the product is “of a piece.”
June 24: no class
July 1: Increases and decreases: why so many types; how to use them; when to use them.
July 8: Knitting in the round, either on circular or double-pointed needles.
July 15: Beginning lace techniques: the yarn over, increases, decreases, pattern repeats, knowing the pattern, mapping the project.
July 22: Edging techniques: slipping the first stitch, creating a firm edge with garter stitch, single or double seed stitch, etc. Answer the big question: “Why won’t my scarf lie flat?”
July 29: Understanding how yarn content, texture, plumpness and needle size contribute to a desirable product.
August 5: Taking a “formula for a stitch design” and reproducing it over any number of rows and across any number of stitches.
August 12: Creating a larger version of a stitch sequence to make a larger product: for example, reproducing a dish cloth design in an afghan. How many repeats; making the number of stitches fit the design. This is the second stage of August 5 lesson.
August 19: Open class: any request can be considered.
August26: Review of the summer’s classes: answers to any questions that still lurk in one’s mind.
